How many jobs has AI replaced?

Challenger, Gray & Christmas has tracked AI as a stated reason for job cuts since 2023. Through June 2026, 173,568 announced US job cuts have cited AI. That figure counts what employers said in their own announcements, so it sits closer to a stated cause than a verified headcount. It also misses the version nobody announces, where a role simply never gets reposted. Behind each of those announcements is somebody who found out on a Tuesday.

How many job cuts did AI drive in June 2026?

US employers announced 45,849 job cuts in June 2026, according to the Challenger, Gray & Christmas report published July 1, 2026. Of those, 14,029 named AI as the reason, or 31% of the month's total. AI has now led the stated reasons for job cuts 4 months running. One month like that is a news cycle. Four in a row is a pattern worth planning around.

What share of 2026 layoffs are attributed to AI?

About 23%. Challenger, Gray & Christmas counted 443,604 announced US job cuts in the first half of 2026, and roughly 101,743 of them named AI. AI now leads the stated reasons. It still accounts for under a quarter of the total, with cost pressure and demand that never arrived making up most of the rest. A workforce plan that treats AI as the explanation for every cut is aimed at the wrong target.

Is AI showing up in the unemployment rate?

Not in any way the official data names. The Bureau of Labor Statistics Employment Situation released July 2, 2026 put US unemployment at 4.2% for June, with 57,000 jobs added. BLS does not attribute either figure to AI, and no BLS release currently breaks out AI as a cause at all. So the national numbers stay calm while the Challenger figures climb. Aggregate calm and individual disruption sit together comfortably, which is why the rate on its own is a poor early warning system.

Which workers are most affected by AI so far?

Early-career software developers, by the clearest margin in the data. Stanford HAI's 2026 AI Index Report found employment for software developers aged 22 to 25 has fallen about 20% since 2024. These are people who did what they were told to do, in the field they were told to enter. The same report found demand for AI skills in the information sector rose to 13.2% in 2025, up from 7.8% the year before. Demand is moving toward AI skills faster than the entry door is opening.

How many companies expect AI to cut jobs next year?

33% of them. Stanford HAI's 2026 AI Index Report found that a third of surveyed organizations expect AI to cause workforce reductions in the coming year. That is a plan, stated in advance, by the people who write the budgets. Ask your own leadership what number sits behind their version of that answer, and who owns the retraining line. A company that expects reductions and funds no retraining has already told you which one it means.
